“The Kastlhänghöhle extends up to 35 metres into the rock. Back in the beginning of the 19th century, I and my friend the antiquities researcher Ferdinand Birkner enjoyed visiting the excavations by Mr Fraunholz and Mr Obermaier. They told us they had found numerous bones of cave bear. It seems both cave bear and our Stone Age ancestors used the caves – though probably not at the same time!
We know so little about how our ancestors might have used the caves, especially the inner sections, far from daylight. Perhaps ritual ceremonies took place here, whose purpose and nature may be beyond our wildest dreams?”
